How do you go about conveying moods and emotions in your music?

When producing music there is always an emotion or mood you are trying to portray, whether that is the main focus of the song or not. For some that may be hard to know where to start or how to do this. This page is to be a guidance of sorts and give juicy nuggets of knowledge to help convey moods and emotions into your own songs.

These are the features to think about before starting a song:

  • Genre, Structure and Tempo -  The characteristics, how fast or slow and how to set it out (Verse/chorus/repetition) your song.

  • Instruments and Audio Effects - The different types of instruments and their use. And how effects (reverb, delay, compression etc) can manipulate their sound.

  • Lyrical content and Vocal Techniques - The meaning of your song, how to deliver it (screaming, spoken word etc) and thinking about you want to portray how you want the listener to feel.

  • Tonality - minor/major/dissonant in chords, chord progressions, scales and intervals.

These are all the features I’m going to cover alongside a bit of music theory, how boring I know. However, I deem it important to have a least a basic understanding and knowledge about it.
